BHB Billiton Looks To Expand Coal Operations (BHP)

When it comes to commodity stocks, there is perhaps no name more prolific than BHP Billiton Ltd (BHP). The Australian-based natural resource giant has operations across the world and has its hands in everything from iron ore and natural gas to aluminum and diamond mining. And while the company’s over 150-year history is certainly a testament to its success, BHP Billiton has recently fallen out of favor with commodity investors, as concerns over falling revenue have come to the forefront [for more commodity news and analysis subscribe to our free newsletter].

Contango Report: Natural Gas, Silver, Wheat Face Rising Prices

In the futures world, the word contango is often treated like a four-letter obscenity. But when traders understand that it is simply a natural phenomenon that can be navigated, contango loses its negative connotation. Contango is defined as the process whereby near month futures are cheaper than those expiring further into the future, creating an upward sloping curve for future prices over time. It has been known to burn investors who are not aware of its presence, but staying one step ahead of the futures curve can lead to smarter, more efficient trades [for more commodity news and analysis subscribe to our free newsletter].

Jim Rogers: The Gold Correction Is Not Over

Legendary commodity investor Jim Rogers has never been shy about vocalizing his opinions about the investing world. In particular, Rogers has an affinity for commodities like ags and precious metals. Gold has been one of the most talked about hard assets of the last two years, as the metal soared to all-time highs, only to watch its price take a tumble in the months that followed. All along the way, Rogers had been calling for a correction for gold, and it is a sentiment that he still holds today [for more gold news and analysis subscribe to our free newsletter].

Soybean Prices Set To Simmer

With applications in oils, animal feed and in our own meals, soybeans have become a staple crop in the U.S. and many other nations. While soybeans are originally from Southeast Asia, with Chinese farmers among the first to domesticate the crop, the U.S. currently both produces and exports more than any country in the world. But holding the majority of the world’s supply of this legume has made the U.S. extremely vulnerable to a new trend that looks to have a big impact on the commodity’s price [for more commodity news and analysis subscribe to our free newsletter].

The Uncertain Future For Coal

It used to be that coal dominated energy consumption around the world, as this fossil fuel was both abundant and relatively cheap to use. But as big oil stepped in, the past few decades have seen dependence on coal cool off. In more recent years, coal has taken an even bigger hit as developed countries have attacked the fuel source for its negative environmental impact. As fracking continues to pick up steam and alternative energy sources enjoy growth, many are left wondering what the future holds for coal [for more coal news and analysis subscribe to our free newsletter].

Silver Whiplash Likely, Ahead Of Major Support

While equity markets have been on an absolute tear in 2013, many commodities have been hung out to dry. As investors have become more comfortable with stocks and a bit more risky in their portfolios, one asset class has been particularly pummelled: precious metals. It wasn’t long ago that analysts were calling for silver and gold to hit unprecedented highs (gold, in fact, did hit historic highs in 2011) only to watch their prices take a major hit in the subsequent months.

Bernanke: Fed Sticks To Stimulus Measures, But Changes Loom

Wall Street was in for some choppy trading sessions this week, as investors shifted their attention to the Fed and its massive stimulus measures. Earlier this week, markets took their cue from comments made by three Fed officials. Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago President Charles Evans had stated that while the central bank’s stimulus measures have made good progress, officials need “more time” before they can make any substantial monetary policy changes. St. Louis Fed President James Bullard’s and New York Fed President William Dudley’s commentary also reflected this sentiment, though Dudley indicated that the Fed could change asset purchases in either direction [for more market news and analysis subscribe to our free newsletter].
