Banks Face Harsh Commodity Regulations

An event several years in the making could be just days away. For some time now, the Fed has been debating whether or not it should limit big banks and their participation in the commodities markets. The debate stemmed from a number of accusations of market manipulation for profit, though most of the institutions on the chopping block have maintained their innocence. ProShares Debuts Leveraged Natural Gas ETFs

This article originally appeared on ETFdb.com ProShares, the largest issuer of geared ETFs that has made a push into the alternatives space, adding two more products to its lineup late last week. The new Ultra DJ-UBS Natural Gas (BOIL) and UltraShort DJ-UBS Natural Gas (KOLD) are both linked to the Dow Jones-UBS Natural Gas Subindex, a benchmark that consists of natural gas futures contracts. BOIL will seek to deliver daily results that correspond to 200% of the change in the underlying index, while KOLD will target -200% of the daily returns of the benchmark. UBS Unveils Natural Gas, Crude Oil ‘Contango ETNs’

The latest innovation in the commodity ETP space came from UBS on Thursday, as the company rolled out a pair of products designed to exploit contango in two of the most heavily-traded energy futures markets. The new ETRACS Natural Gas Futures Contango ETN (GASZ) and ETRACS Oil Futures Contango ETN (OILZ) will be linked to indexes maintained by ISE that effectively maintain short exposure to front month contracts and long exposure to mid-term futures contracts.

Global X Launches Farming ETF (BARN)

The product marks the 34th fund in total from the company and follows on the heels of several other food-focused ETFs from the company, including the Fertilizer/Potash ETF (SOIL), Food ETF (EATX), and Fishing Industry ETF (FISN). Add in the company’s Waste Management ETF (WSTE), and investors can now gain access to every aspect of the food cycle via exchange-traded products.

Global X Debuts Fertilizer ETF (SOIL)

Global X notched another ETF industry first on Thursday, debuting a fund that focuses on companies globally that are engaged in some aspect of the fertilizer industry. The Global X Fertilizers/Potash ETF (SOIL) seeks to replicate the Solactive Global Fertilizers/Potash Index, a benchmark that includes about 29 companies from both developed and emerging markets.
